Eugene arrived at Bear House as the smallest member of the household and immediately became the heart of it. Nobody is entirely sure how this happened. It simply did. Eugene is a baby giant panda with an extraordinary passion for cereal — specifically Honey Nut Cheerios, though he maintains an open mind about all varieties and has conducted extensive personal research across forty seven different types. His Amazon order history is exclusively cereal. He once accidentally ordered a clipboard. He does not know what a clipboard is for. He offered it a Cheerio anyway.

Eugene’s other great love is the chandelier in the main hallway, which he discovered on his first day at Bear House and immediately recognized as thefinest swinging apparatus he had ever encountered. Ava has since reinforced the mounting with full architectural specifications. Eugene considers this an endorsement. He answers the door whether anyone has asked him to or not. He once answered the door to a very small Russian wolf who had come to blow the house down and offered him Cheerios instead. The wolf accepted them. Eugene considers this a successful outcome because it was.

Eugene communicates primarily in short enthusiastic sentences and Cheerio offerings. He chairs household meetings from Yogianna’s chair, which is technically not his chair, using Cheerios as both agenda items and diplomatic currency. Nobody has ever successfully removed him from this role. He was the first to notice Boris in the treeline every morning and began waving at him before anyone else had decided what to do about the situation. Boris waves back now. Eugene considers this inevitable because everyone eventually becomes his friend. So far he has been correct about this 100% of the time. He sat next to Boris at Frostie’s birthday party and shared his Cheerios without being asked. He rapped at Frostie’s birthday party without being invited to do so. He used a Cheerio as a mic drop. The household is still talking about it. Eugene does not fully understand danger. He understands Cheerios. In his experience these are the same thing.
